Scunthorpe
Scunthorpe united
Ian Botham chose between football and cricket right at the start of his career when he received an offer from Crystal Palace Football Club but instead chose to play cricket for Somerset. Later he played briefly for Scunthorpe United while recovering from an injury. Born in 1955 in Heswall, Cheshire, Botham started playing for Somerset in 1974. His Test career began in 1977 and over 15 years of playing at that level he has scored 5,200 runs and taken 384 wickets. He was Wisden's cricketer of the year in 1978 and later voted BBC Sports personality of the Year. He left Somerset in 1985 in protest at the sacking of two colleagues and joined Worcestershire. He later went on to play for newcomers at County Championship level, Durham. He retired in 1993. He once held the record for the greatest number of Test wickets and was the first player to ever to score a century and take ten wickets in the same Test match.
