The Premier League was founded in 1992. It had previously been called Division One in the English Football League. The Premiership began following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League to take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal.
The Barclays Premiership (as it is usually known) set out to do many things when it began. Including being 'regarded as the world's best league football competition - on and off the field.'
And the Premiership is currently seen as one of the best leagues in the world and continues to attract top foreign players including Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Andriy Shevchenko and Jurgen Klinsmann to name just a few.
The Premiership also wanted to:
'Increase interest in our competitions, promote accessibility to live games and ensure that media exposure is used to optimum effect.'
Since the start of the Premiership the amount of football on television has increased ten-fold with football now available to watch almost every day of the week.
