Basketball was by founded Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physician who studied at Mc Gill University. He used to mostly conduct indoor games for students in order to keep them active. It was this time, that he modified a game with some fundamental rules and nailed a peach basket onto the 10-foot (3.05 m) track. The net on the basket was totally covered, as in it did not let the ball to pass through but would stay in the basket. It would only be removed with the help of a bamboo.

The first ever basketball game was officially played at YMCA Gymnasium on 20th January, 1982 with just nine players in the team and with a court that is half the size today. One of the most popular players from his students suggested the name "Basketball".

Basketball is unique in the sense that it was invented by one person. It did not evolve from a different sport. In December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian-born physician and minister on the faculty of a college for YMCA professionals (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, wanted a vigorous indoor game to keep young men occupied during the long New England winters. Legend has it that, after rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules, and nailed a peach basket onto the 10 foot elevated track.

Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The first balls made especially for basketball were brown, and it was only in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle, searching for a ball that would be more visible to players and spectators alike, introduced the orange ball that is now in common use.
