As of 2012, Wayne Rooney has scored 29 goals in 76 matches playing for England. He has played at several major tournaments for his national side, including Euro 2004, the 2006 World Cup, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

International Career

Wayne Rooney became England's youngest-ever player upon winning his first cap in a friendly game against Australia in 2003, at the age of seventeen. This record has subsequently been broken by winger Theo Walcott, but Rooney still holds the record for being the youngest player to score a goal for England. He has also held the record for being the European Championship's youngest-ever goal scorer.

Club Career

Wayne Rooney grew up in Liverpool and supported Everton from a young age, eventually being scouted by the club when he was nine years old. He progressed through the team's youth ranks before being handed his first team debut in 2002, becoming Everton's second youngest player in history. He currently holds the record for being the club's youngest ever goal scorer, netting his first and second Everton goals against Wrexham in a League Cup match.

In 2004, the striker signed with Manchester United for a fee of £25 million, which still is the highest fee ever payed for a player under 20 years old. In his initial season with United Rooney was the club's leading goalscorer and won the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
