Manchester United's Wayne Rooney suffered a fracture to a bone on his right foot after a tackle from Chelsea right back Paulo Ferreira in their defeat in April 2006. He fractured the base of his fourth metatarsal before he miraculously recovered for the world cup.
Rooney was running in from the left wing when he was innocuously tackled by Ferreira in the 80th minute. Ferreira was trying to get the ball in a sliding tackle but ended up getting Rooney's right ankle. Rooney had broken his metatarsal before but it was not so serious the previous time. He was advised to rest for 6 weeks and say no to all forms of exercises.
Ultimately on June 15th Rooney was passed fit to play and came on as a substitute in the second half of England's game against Trinidad and Tobago. England won the game 2-0. Rooney failed to score.
