The sport of basketball was founded in the early part of the month of December 1891, which is the winter season in the northern hemisphere. The inventor of basketball is Dr. James Naismith. Dr. Naismith was a physician at McGill University in Canada. He also served as a minister on the faculty of a college for professionals who worked with the Young Men's Christian Association (abbreviated as the YMCA). The college is now known as Springfield College. It is located in the city of Springfield in the state of Massachusetts in the United States of America.
Dr. Naismith invented basketball in order to keep his students occupied and at the peak of their fitness levels during the long winters in the New England region of the United States of America. The first game of basketball was played using a ball and a peach basket which was nailed onto an elevated track which was about ten feet, or approximately 3.05 metres, tall.
