According to history Olympics were started in the beginning of 776 BC, they were first held in Olympia, Greece till 393 AD.

The Modern summer Olympics were started in 1896 and were held after an interval of every four years. Olympics were not held in 1916, 1940 and 1944 due to the ongoing world wars during these years.

An event exclusively for winter sports, which was known as the Olympic Winter Games, was first conducted during 1924. The winter Olympics were first kept as a non-Olympic event but was later declared an Olympic event in the year 1925 by the Olympic committee.

There are many stories regarding the starting point of the ancient Olympic Games. One of these stories links the original game to the ancient Greek concept (ekecheiria) or Olympic truce.
