The word parry in boxing refers to the blocking or parrying of an incoming attack. The boxer uses his hands to deflect an incoming blow. Just as the punch thrown by the opponent arrives the boxer deflects it by using his fists and landing an open handed, lateral and sharp blow to the opponents arm redirecting the attack. The technique is employed for stronger punches. These punches cannot be caught effectively and a direct blow may injure the person defending. The technique used should be to deflect the punch toward the inside as this may have the added advantage of throwing ones opponent of his or her balance. If the technique is employed correctly it gives one an opening to counter attack. Body shots are generally parried toward the outside and by moving further in the opposite direction of the punch an opportunity to counter attack can be achieved.
