The difficulty of each hole on a golf course results in a stated Par rating for the hole which is the number of shots it should take to get the ball in the cup. The typical hole ratings are Par 3 Par 4 and Par 5. Shooting the ball into the hole one less than par is called a Birdie, two less than par is called an Eagle. One shot over par is called a bogey and two shots over par is a double bogey.
Birdie in golf means you got one under par. (for example, if you have to get to the hole in three strokes and you get it in two strokes, that is one under par, which is a birdie.)
It is one stroke less than what is par for the hole.
It means you make it in the hole with one less stroke than expected. One less than "par".
