Playing second base requires a great deal of attention by the athlete. ideally, you would stand approximately 1/3 of the way between 1st and 2nd, closer to second. Approximately 10-15 feet behind the bag. By positioning here you can still cover 2nd if a force will occur on a ball hit to the left side of the infield and cover the area for a ground ball hit to the right side of the infield or move back on a shallow fly to the outfield. You can also back up the shortstop on throws to second from the catcher on a runner trying to steal a base.

Second base is also known as 2B. It is defined as the second of the four stations of the field of play in a game of baseball (which is known as a baseball diamond). A base runner must go to all the four stations on the baseball diamond in order to score a run for his team.

A second baseman stands at second base (which is also known as the keystone sack). The term second baseman is also known as second bagger. A second baseman should possess quick hands and feet in order to get rid of the ball quickly and he should be able to make the pivot on a double play. Second basemen are assigned the number four in the system of numbering which is used for the purpose of recording defensive plays.
