The football league was formed in eighteen eighty eight and initially had only twleve members, these twelve sides are now widely accepted as the twelve original founders of the football league.

The twelve sides were Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wnaderers. Interstingly there was no London or North Eastern clubs present during the first season of organised club football.

The opening games of the season were held on September the eigth, eighteen eighty eight with an away win for Derby who beat Bolton six , three; Everton beat Accrington two, one at home; Preston also won at home, beating Burnley five, two; West Brom recorded their first away win, beating Stoke two, nothing, And in the final game that day, between local rivals Aston Villa and Wolves, the game finished in a one all draw, with Wolves having home advantage.
