Who doesn't want to check the result of their team at the end of a busy Saturday of football? The results service has been a key feature of UK weekend sports broadcasts on TV and radio since the earliest days of such programmes.

The classified football results are usually broadcast around around 5.00pm each Saturday and are done so on a variety of TV and radio shows. BBC1 broadcasts the results as the part of the Final Score programme (formerly part of the now defunct Grandstand), while the BBC's news and sports radio station, Five Live, features the results service just after the start of each weekly edition of Sports Report. Over on Sky Sports, the results come towards the end of its Gillette Soccer Saturday show and are read by Alan Lamborn.

The commercial radio station Talksport also transmits the football results as soon as the afternoon's fixtures are completed. The results service is a big part of a British soccer fan's Saturday, as he checks the results of both their own team, and those of their rivals.

Famous Voices of the Football Results

For 37 years, the football results were read on BBC TV by the Australian Len Martin, until his death in 1995. There was sad news relating to the football results service recently, when it was announced that James Alexander Gordon, a Scot who had read out the results on BBC Radio's Sports Report between 1974 to 2013, passed away at the age of 78. He was replaced by Charlotte Green, the first woman to be given the job. Here's a tribute to James Alexander Gordon:
