Make sure that you set your meter on the higher range than you are testing. It should be on volts dc if you are testing the batteries...voltage ac if you you are on the charger power source of the charger...check also the on/off switch then to forward/reverse and to the foot pedal

The AC settings I managed to avoid. The largest problem was the batteries were out of sequence. Each battery grounded to the frame increased from 12 to 24 to 36 to 48 when hooked up correctly. Thanks for taking the time. Now I am pretty good with the multimeter. I even use it to test all the AA, C, etc batteries I find around the house.
