It  started out because they wanted to get all the countries to participate in these games. They also did it to worship Zeus. The Olympics was named after Mount Olympus where Zeus's statue is at.

The Olympics were basically started as religious ritual, conducting contests along with sacrifices and ceremonies honouring both Zeus and Pelops. The celebration was spread over a number of days after the number of events increased to twenty.

Based on information in Olympiads, the first Olympic Games were held in Greece 776 BC. However scholars believe that date back as early as 884 BC and as late as 704 BC. The Olympics reached its zenith in the sixth and fifth centuries BC. The games declined in importance as Romans gained power. Olympic Games were considered a pagan festival after Christianity became the official religion. Olympics were outlawed by emperor Theodosius in 393 AD as they were considered in discord with Christian ethics, thus putting an end to a thousand year old tradition. They were revived in the seventeenth century at the sports festival that was held in Shropshire, England. The first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896in Athens.

The Ancient Greek Olympic Games originated in the town of Olympia in the period of 776 BC, and lasted to roughly 393 AD, with 292 Games held. Although the exact historical motivations for setting up the Games have been lost, popular myths argue that they were held as part of a ritual, offering sacrifices to the king of Olympia Pelops. He had defeated King Oenomaus to win his daughter Hippodamia. Other myths include a demand by Heracles to re-enact a race he won at Olympia every four years, while another suggests that King Iphitos of Elos organized the games as a mark of honour to the gods. The Games were held in the shadow of an enormous statue of the god Zeus, with the periods inbetween known as the Olympiad. The main event at this time was a stadion race, taking place over 190 meters, while others included boxing, wrestling and pentathlon. There were also Games for women, named as the Heraea Games, as the Olympics themselves were only open to men who spoke Greek.

No one can pinpoint the exact reason for the organization of the first Olympics. However, the prevailing school of thought is that they became a part of the pre-existing religious rituals and gradually became largely independant from the religious aspects.
At first, only men were allowed to participate, or even spectate, and the athletes competed in the nude, honoring the might of the human body. There was a myth that one of the athletes mothers was able to sneak into the stands to see her son compete, but she eventually was caught. From then on, the spectators were also required to arrive and watch the games with no clothing.
The Olympics gradually declined in popularity throughout the reign of the Roman Empire. They were revived in the 1600s, but not officially restarted until 1896 in the place where it all started, Athens, Greece.
